Connect your email to an AI app
SuperMailbox connects the email accounts you choose to an AI client over MCP. You first authorize SuperMailbox to access each mailbox, then separately authorize each AI client that should be able to use your mail.
Before you start
- Create a SuperMailbox account and choose an eligible subscription. Mail tools require subscription access, and a mailbox that is outside your plan limit or needs reconnection may be unavailable to an AI client.
- Connect the mailbox in Mailboxes. Common options include Gmail, Outlook, iCloud Mail, Yahoo Mail, Fastmail, and other IMAP accounts. Which providers and actions are available depends on the provider, its authentication and server settings, and your account status.
- For Gmail and Outlook, follow the provider sign-in and permission screen. For iCloud Mail, use an Apple app-specific password; never enter your primary Apple Account password. Other providers may require an app password or IMAP/SMTP server details.
The provider authorization lets SuperMailbox connect to that mailbox. It does not authorize ChatGPT, Claude, or another AI app to read it. The AI app gets access only after a separate SuperMailbox MCP authorization.
Connect ChatGPT
- Check that your ChatGPT account and workspace allow custom MCP apps. Plan, workspace, and administrator rules can limit this feature.
- In ChatGPT on the web, follow OpenAI’s current instructions for connecting a custom MCP server. Choose the custom server option, enter the SuperMailbox endpoint below, and select OAuth if asked.
- Continue to SuperMailbox, sign in, review the client name and requested scopes, read the email-data disclosure, and approve only if you are comfortable granting that client access. Return to ChatGPT to finish setup and enable the app in a chat.
Connect Claude
Open the SuperMailbox listing in Claude’s directory. The published card is labeled Community and currently lists 21 tools. Sign in to Claude if prompted, then follow its on-screen steps to add the connector. Availability can depend on your account and workspace settings.
If the listing is unavailable to your account, you can add SuperMailbox as a custom connector instead:
- Open Customize → Connectors → Yours in Claude, then choose Add connector → Add custom connector. Older versions may link here from Settings → Connectors. Organization owners may need to add the connector for Team or Enterprise workspaces first.
- Name it SuperMailbox and enter
https://api.supermailbox.app/mcp?profile=claude. Choose Sign in now and Use Claude’s published identity, then add the connector. - Click Connect, continue to SuperMailbox, sign in, review the requested scopes and email-data disclosure, then approve if you agree. Return to Claude and allow individual tool calls when prompted.
See Anthropic’s current remote MCP connector instructions for plan and workspace requirements. Claude may require sign-in or workspace-admin approval before a connector can be added.
Connect Grok
- In Grok on the web, open Plugins → Connectors, then choose New Connector → Custom. Custom connectors must be available to your account; a workspace administrator may need to enable them.
- Name the connector SuperMailbox and enter
https://api.supermailbox.app/mcp. - Continue to SuperMailbox, sign in, and review the requested permissions and email-data disclosure. Approve if you agree, then choose Continue to Grok to finish connecting.
- Check that SuperMailbox appears under Connected. Start with a read-only search in a Grok chat.
SuperMailbox MCP server URL
For a remote MCP connection, use this HTTPS endpoint:
https://api.supermailbox.app/mcp
For Claude, use https://api.supermailbox.app/mcp?profile=claude. This uses the same service and permissions, with Claude’s stricter confirmation hints for all mailbox changes.
Complete the OAuth flow in your browser. Do not paste a mailbox password, app-specific password, access token, or refresh token into an AI chat or connector URL field.
Review the requested permissions
The consent page shows the scopes requested by the AI client. It offers approve or cancel; it does not let you edit the client’s request. If the request is broader than you want, cancel. Identity scopes identify your SuperMailbox account; mail scopes authorize specific mail operations.
| Scope | What it allows |
|---|---|
openid, email | Identify your SuperMailbox account to the client. |
mail.profile | Read your SuperMailbox profile and connected mailbox count. |
mail.accounts.read | List your connected mailboxes, folders, approved sender addresses, rules, and queued action status. Polling an action also requires that action’s permission. |
mail.messages.read | Search email and read message or thread contents. Reading a message does not mark it as read. |
mail.attachments.read | Fetch a requested attachment (up to 8 MiB). Returned attachment content is sent to the AI client. |
mail.drafts.write | Create an unsent draft in a connected mailbox. |
mail.send | Send, reply to, or forward email through a connected mailbox. |
mail.modify | Change read status or stars, archive or move messages, and manage SuperMailbox rules for new incoming mail. |
When mail scopes are requested, SuperMailbox also asks you to consent to sending the mail information you request through that client; the client handles information it receives under its own privacy and retention practices. This is separate from provider authorization and from SuperMailbox search processing described in the Privacy Policy.
Some mailbox changes are queued. A client needs mail.accounts.read plus the original action’s scope to check its status. Wait for completed before reporting the action as finished. If an action fails, check its result and the mailbox before repeating it; an uncertain send should not be retried automatically.
Try a search
Start with a read-only request, such as asking the client to find unread mail or summarize a message without marking it as read:
- “Search my connected mailboxes for unread messages from Acme about the renewal, and tell me which mailboxes were searched.”
- “Open the newest matching message and summarize it. Do not mark it as read.”
When you are ready for a mailbox change, you can ask for an unsent draft separately:
- “Create a draft reply for me, but do not send it.”
Understand search results
Search can include cached results, take time to finish across all selected mailboxes, or return only part of the available results. Ask the client to say whether every mailbox was searched and whether the results may be partial, delayed, or stale. If it is still searching or reports an error, ask it to wait or repeat the search and explain what remains incomplete. A request for a fresh result may still return a cached copy. An empty partial or stale result does not prove that no matching email exists.
If a mailbox says needs_reauth or “Reconnect,” open Mailboxes in SuperMailbox and reconnect it with the provider. Check the mailbox status and plan eligibility before treating an empty result as final.
Drafts, sending, and changes
create_draft saves an unsent draft. Sending, replying, and forwarding use a separate mail.send permission and cause an external action through your provider. Give a clear instruction, confirm the exact recipient and message content, and review what the client reports. A queued send is not confirmation; only completed confirms provider success, and an uncertain send should not be retried automatically.
Mailbox changes such as archiving, moving, marking read, starring, or enabling a rule can affect your mailbox. SuperMailbox has no MCP tool for permanently deleting messages or emptying Trash. Rules are SuperMailbox rules for new incoming mail, not provider-native filters, and supported actions vary by mailbox.
Disconnect or revoke access
- Revoke one AI client from AI connections. This stops that client’s future access to SuperMailbox; it does not disconnect your mailbox or erase information the AI client has already received.
- Disconnect a mailbox from Mailboxes to stop SuperMailbox from accessing it. You can also review provider-side permissions in the provider account where that option is available.
- Check the AI client’s own privacy and data controls for information it received while connected.
Need help?
If setup fails, confirm the endpoint matches the instructions for your AI client, your account can use custom connectors, the mailbox is active and within your plan, and the provider has not requested reconnection.
